DSC practical guideWhat is a DSC Digital Signature Certificate?
A Digital Signature Certificate, commonly called a DSC, is an electronic certificate issued in the name of a verified subscriber by a licensed Certifying Authority. It connects the subscriber's verified identity with the digital key used to sign an electronic form, return, application or document.
A digital signature helps the receiving portal check who signed the electronic record and whether the signed information was altered after signing. The certificate does not replace every portal registration or authorisation. The user must still be permitted to sign for the relevant individual, company, LLP, partnership firm or other organisation.
- ✓Issued after applicant identity verification
- ✓Used to authenticate supported electronic records
- ✓Stored and used through a compatible cryptographic device or approved process
- ✓Must be valid, active and suitable for the intended portal
DSC practical guideWhich Class 3 DSC should you choose?
The correct Digital Signature Certificate depends on the applicant, the required portal and whether signing alone or signing with encryption is needed. An Individual Signing DSC may be suitable for common tax and statutory filings, while an Individual Combo DSC provides signing and encryption capability for supported portals.
An Organisation Combo DSC is issued for an authorised person acting for a company, LLP, partnership firm or other organisation. A dedicated DGFT DSC is generally selected for DGFT and foreign-trade portal work. Tell us the exact portal before ordering so that the suitable option can be checked.
- ✓Individual Signing DSC: supported tax, MCA, EPFO and other signing work
- ✓Individual Combo DSC: signing and encryption for supported individual-use portals
- ✓Organisation Combo DSC: an authorised user signing for a company, LLP or firm
- ✓DGFT DSC: eligible DGFT and foreign-trade signing work
DSC practical guideImportant portal limits before you buy a DSC
An Individual Signing DSC is not intended for DGFT signing, encryption-based portals, ICEGATE and every tender website. An Individual Combo DSC cannot be used for DGFT and tenders that specifically require a DSC for a Private Limited Company, LLP or Partnership Firm.
Organisation Combo, DGFT, tender and ICEGATE requirements can differ according to the portal, applicant type, bid or transaction. Share the exact portal name and the work you want to complete before the DSC is applied for. This reduces the risk of buying a certificate that the portal will not accept.
- ✓Check whether the portal needs signing only or signing with encryption
- ✓Check whether the applicant must be an individual or an organisation user
- ✓Check whether a dedicated DGFT certificate is required
- ✓Check tender-specific and ICEGATE compatibility before ordering
DSC practical guideCommon uses of a Digital Signature Certificate
A Class 3 DSC is commonly used to authenticate electronic forms, returns, applications and documents. Depending on the DSC type and portal rules, it may be used for Income Tax, GST, MCA or ROC filings, Director KYC, EPFO, ESIC, trademark work, IEC-related work, ICEGATE and eligible e-tender or e-procurement portals.
One DSC is not automatically suitable for every portal. Tender, DGFT, ICEGATE and encryption requirements can differ. We recommend confirming the intended use before the application is processed.
- ✓Income Tax forms, audit reports and supported tax filings
- ✓GST registration, return and other supported GST submissions
- ✓MCA or ROC forms, Director KYC and company or LLP filings
- ✓EPFO, ESIC, trademark and supported business portals
- ✓DGFT, ICEGATE and eligible tender work with the correct DSC type
DSC practical guideDocuments required to get a DSC online
Every applicant normally provides Aadhaar, PAN, an active mobile number and an email address. The applicant must be available for the required identity and video-verification process. Clear, consistent information helps avoid a mismatch during approval.
Organisation and DGFT applications need additional business evidence. A Partnership Firm may need its Partnership Deed, while a Private Limited Company or LLP needs its incorporation certificate. An Authorisation Letter is required for the applicable organisation applicant, and a DGFT DSC also needs the IEC Certificate.
- ✓Individual Signing: Aadhaar, PAN, mobile number and email ID
- ✓Individual Combo: same documents, with GST and Udyam optional
- ✓Organisation Combo: KYC, GST certificate, entity proof and Authorisation Letter
- ✓DGFT DSC: KYC, IEC Certificate, entity proof and Authorisation Letter
DSC practical guideDSC validity, USB token, renewal and installation
After the DSC type and validity are selected, the applicant shares the required documents and completes identity and video verification. Issuance remains subject to successful verification and approval by the certifying authority.
You can choose a two-year or three-year certificate and select whether a compatible USB token is required. A certificate has its own validity period. An expiring or expired DSC generally requires a fresh application and verification instead of simply extending the old certificate. We assist with certificate download, compatible token setup and basic installation after approval.
- ✓Two-year and three-year certificate options
- ✓USB token Yes or No selection
- ✓Certificate download and token setup support
- ✓Fresh verification for renewal or replacement where required
DSC practical guideDSC not working? Common checks before filing
A DSC may fail on a portal even when the certificate is valid. Common causes include an unregistered DSC, a PAN or authorised-signatory mismatch, an expired certificate, an unsupported certificate type, a token driver problem or a signer utility that is not running correctly.
First confirm that the token is detected, the correct certificate is visible, the validity has not expired and the DSC is registered on the portal where registration is required. Then check the portal's current signer utility, browser and operating-system instructions. Portal-specific support may still be needed when the error continues.
- ✓Check certificate validity and applicant PAN
- ✓Confirm the DSC is registered or associated with the portal user
- ✓Reconnect the token and check its compatible driver
- ✓Run the required signer utility according to portal instructions
- ✓Confirm that the selected DSC type is accepted by the portal
DSC practical guideKeep your DSC token, PIN and OTP secure
The DSC is issued to the subscriber, and the subscriber should keep control of the USB token and signing credentials. Do not share the token PIN, verification OTP or remote access to the signing device with an unknown person. Review the document or form before allowing a digital signature to be affixed.
If a token is lost, the PIN is exposed, the authorised person leaves the organisation or misuse is suspected, contact the relevant Certifying Authority or service provider promptly to check revocation and replacement. A new authorised user may require a new organisation DSC and fresh authorisation documents.
